Police crack down on suspected Mafia gambling ring in Bergen County, N.Y.
Authorities arrested nearly 30 people during the past two days in a crackdown on a suspected Mafia sports gambling ring in Bergen County and Westchester County, N.Y. that took in more than $1 million in bets each week, a report in the record said.
According to the report, part of the profits went to the Genovese Crime Family hierarchy, which the report calls historically the most powerful and entrenched Mafia syndicate in North Jersey.
Police arrested 28 of the 34 people in coordinated raids that began Tuesday night, the report said.
The ring used code names and passwords for gamblers to place wagers on sporting events by calling telephone numbers or visiting Web sites, the Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelliaid told The Record. Ranking members would meet with members of the ring in parking lots, bookstores and diners to exchange cash, and one member, a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, would meet with a ranking member in his mail truck, the report said.
